Golf Cart Registration

 

PERMIT PROCESS

Download, complete, and submit this Registration Form (PDF) and this Rules & Regulations packet (PDF) with the registration fee of $50.00 in person or by mail to the Sweeny Police Department.  These are instructions (PDF) to assist you in this process.  All checks should be made payable to the City of Sweeny.  A copy of your insurance and valid Texas driver license should be sent along with the registration form and Rules & Regulations packet.  Applicants must attest to the fact they are in compliance with the ordinance prior to submitting the application and associated fee.  The golf cart must be inspected at the police department (see section below for details).  The permit decal will be issued in person or return mail after successful completion of the registration and inspection process.

INSPECTION PROCESS

The golf cart must be inspected by an official at the Sweeny Police Department before the permit is issued.  CAUTION: Golf carts are not allowed to be operated on the roadways for the purpose of driving to the police department for this inspection process — the golf cart must be transported for the inspection process.  We will not inspect nor issue a permit if the golf cart is driven on the roadway prior to the permit being issued.

 

ORDINANCE

City council passed the Golf Cart Ordinance on February 18, 2020.  The registration and permit process will begin at the police department on March 16, 2020.

GOLF CART REGISTRATION FAQs

When does the newly adopted golf cart ordinance go into effect?
February 18, 2020
Who is legally allowed to drive a golf cart in Sweeny?
Any person who has a valid state driver license and who is in full compliance with the license’s endorsements and restrictions.
Where can I drive my golf cart?
Golf carts can only be driven on public roadways with a posted speed limit of not more than 30 mph.  Golf carts are prohibited on the following streets: Main Street (FM 524), Second Street (FM1459), Ashley Wilson Road.
Where can I apply for my golf cart registration permit and decal?
Register at the police department either in person or via mail.
How much does the registration cost?
The initial registration fee is $50.00 for each golf cart.  Afterwards, there is a $50.00 annual renewal fee for each subsequent registration.
Can I drive my ATV, Side-By-Side, Mule, 4-Wheeler, NEV, or Gator under this ordinance?
No.  Those vehicles are illegal to operate on Texas roadways.  Only golf carts are permitted under this ordinance.  Golf carts are defined as a motor vehicle primarily designed and manufactured for transporting persons on a golf course.
What is the fine for a violation of the Golf Cart Ordinance?
Violations of the Golf Cart Ordinance are punishable by a fine of up to $500.00 per offense.  Each violation of the ordinance shall constitute a separate offense.
